Getting codecs for windows media player

hey there,

When i try to run some movies with windows media player (on WinXP) , it shows up that a codec is missing , and it start to contact the server to download it , but it fails to connect to the server , consequently i cant play the movie ...

The movie is .divx ...

So how can i (manually) get the required codecs , and how can i know which codec i want from dozens on the net ...

well for divx files I would suggest www.divx.com

Also search for the Elecard MPEG2 Codec and the Nimo Codec Pack. Between those you should be set.

Sometimes you might run into stuff that needs Xvid or somthing more rare, but you shouldnt.

I got divx pro from divx.com and i've been able to play every single video that i've tried. Where as before i could only play about one half using windows media player

well Quicktime is a pretty good player when it comes to MPEG (any version)

Anway WMP will NOT download proprietry codecs.

DivX (a long with others) is a commercial (not free) format, plus of course M$ do NOT want you to use anything other than M$ products........it will NEVER find the codec because it a) Doesn't want to... and b) it isn't lisenced to download this codec.

If you want to play avi's divX/Xvid you need these:

FFDshow (filters and codecs)
DivX 5.n (codec only......don't bother installing the player it a bit pants and 'phones home' to much!)
DixX 3.11 alpha codec (for older DivX's, but still used quite often)
Xvid Codec
AC3 codec (for multi channel sound, very common now)
Zoomplayer or BSplayer both EXCELLENT media players but Zplayer has more control (imo the best AVI player EVER).
AVICodec is also a useful tool to determine the vid & audio codecs on any AVI file.

DONT use codec packs like NIMO as they are renowned for being unstable and creating more problems than they are worth due to the hacked codecs.

PS DO NOT use WMP8/9 unless your severely dimwitted!

lol, I just like to let people know when someone that doesnt know wtf they are talking about tries to give bogus advice.

By the way, might you want to explain to me why I should not use WMP9? I have been using it since it was realeased, with just about every type of AVI file, VCD, SVCD, Divx, etc, that comes out, and havent had a problem. Neither have I had a problem with the NIMO codec pack, or any other packs.
