Just to get this in, but check out the motherboard info SiSoft Sandra generates - you can safely display the results here.
Assuming your motherboard is a 440BX-based (common for the PII and PIII days), AGP setting of the card should always be defaulted to 2x automatically, and for chipsets with AGP 4x support, such as the Intel 815/815x/820 and VIA Apollo Pro 133/133A, either 4x should be automatically enabled or it can be forced through the BIOS setup.
