Games in General Run Slow

Hey, I joined basically for a problem I've had for a year now with my computer when it comes to games. It doesn't matter what settings I put the game on the game always slows down about 5 minutes into playing. My computer should have the specs to handle just about anything.

4GB Ram
Intel Dual Core 2.00GHz
Nvidia 9600M GT
64 Bit Vista

Its an HP Pavilion DV7 Laptop

Things I've tried:
Adjusting all default levels of quality in game
Making sure I have no background programs running
Changed Nvidia 3D settings all the way to performance over quality
Changed various aspects of the game's video quality
Even performed a full system restore to free up all my hard drive disk space and make sure I didn't have any viruses.

Anyone have any suggestions to help remedy this?

My computer should have the specs to handle just about anything.

I would say not really. that graphics processor is only 120MHz.
what games are you trying to play.

And this laptop was released almost 3 years ago.

The issue due to your graphics card, I have face similar issue last month, I have upgraded my graphics card for resolving the issue

maybe installing the last driver of your graphic card would help you !
