of course, if you ask me, you wont really ever get the same performance as, say norton or mcafee or pc-cillin, the best. of course, avg is the best for free. i had it for a while and it did a decent job. but pay is better in this case. think logically: free but not the best for your comp and you could get a virus and screw up your comp. or pay a little and then get awesome protection and have a awesome comp thats protected.

you can pick a copy of norton up of ebay for about a fiver, definatly worth it

well i got a copy and its served me very well since, wasnt just the anti-virus either, was norton systemworks, with ghost, cleansweep and utilities. and all work perfectly, not had a single virus or anything go wrong.

Yes, avg is definatley the best free program, but If I were you I would drop 50 bucks US or so and go get yourself norton or mcaffe, I dont trust my valuable files to freeware (most of the time= some exceptions, Ad-aware, spybot, and some others)
