external hd question

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I have a 1tb western digital external hd to store movies. if i click properties on the drive itself, it shows 719gb used, 211 free. if i right click on the only folder on the drive, it shows a size of 563gb. why the HUGE difference?


if it matters, my computer is an hp running windows 7.

There could possibly be hidden files or folders that you are unaware of. Or a caching issue.

I can help you to view your Hidden Files. so you can check the size.

In Windows 7 to view the hidden files and folders do this.

Open up Windows Explorer > Organize > Folder and Search Options> Click View tab> Check radial button Show hidden files, folders, or drives

Be careful what you delete or modify. There is a reason why the stuff is hidden
