direct modem connection?

Just on a quick task, where bandwidth and speed is UNIMPORTANT but communicaiton is very, they do not have broadband available is there a way of communicating over the UK PSTN directly with each other than using an ISP for each pc? Im hoping it would cost the price of a phone call to do but im not sure if you can directly dial to another computer. Cheers

well obviously terminal services etc bt im talkign tcp/ip here to run my own customer comms software.

thanks everyone for reading, I answered the question for myself and created a vpn which allows my software to dial up to another computer in order to trigger the alarm, thanks!
