Whoops got a bit carried a way in the flow of writing.
The real reason we are going to die on 2012 is I believe the culmination of several theories but I don't believe that it is going to be a flat out explosion that ends life though I think it will be the start of a chain of events which leads to very large changes for our civilisation to survive. I see myself as quite scientific minded and these events all may occur in 2012 as a mass culmination of disasters:
Scientific reasons:
Solar peak. The sun goes through cycles of high activity and lesser activity releasing more flares and solar winds in times of solar maximum, it is 11.5 years that takes this cycle to complete. Some of you old fogeys may remember the Quebec black out of 1989 when a solar storm caused the power grid in quebec to overload due to the increased magnetic energy in the atmosphere, also remarkable as the aurora (northern lights) were seen as far south as Mexico. Every year we are more reliant on electricity and a global scale black out would lead to several months-years before we could repair the complete power grid. In the 1800s a solar maximum caused the telegraph network in North America and Europe to overload resulting in thousands of pounds of damage. Solar flares cause electromagnetic flares in their wake, whilst the Earth is solid and rotates at the same speed across the entirety of its surface the suns equator spins faster then the poles, this stretches magnetic arcs in the atmosphere which eventually break and like a billion nuclear warheads going off at once these shoot the atmosphere into space. These solar flares are visible and takes x amount of seconds to reach Earth however the Mass carried in its wake is a massive cloud of radiation which travels much slower taking 3-4 days to reach Earth. These space clouds are made up of millions of tons of hydrogen, helium, protons, neutrons, electrons and are not dense at all in fact they are so spread out that there are fewer atoms per metre squared then we can create in a vacuum on Earth. No big deal you may think but these clouds act like a sand blaster as in throw a few grains of sand at your arm and its no big deal, however if you fire the sand in a cloud at your arm under the same speed and you will find your now an amputee and your arm as the erosive power of each of the grains combines to have a massive effect. That is what is bombarding the atmosphere. Best of all from Earth it is near impossible to track the speed and therefore predict the data of collision with the particles to the atmosphere like a baseball being thrown at your face froma long distance your stereo vision doesn't work as there is no image to compare the trajectory to and ths calculate the speed off the ball and its trajectory. This is why NASA launched "stereo" which are two satellites which are hundreds of kilometres apart and orbiting the sun the two images are compared from the X-ray cameras and this way EMF's can be tracked. We don't know when a solar flare will occur or for sure why they occur so an EMF could easily strike us whilst we are unprepared. A large solar flare is like a trillion nuclear blasts, our sun is a lot more dormant then it use to be but in its youth the flares are suspected to be billions of times greater and caused the clouds of particles in the solar gravity to combine and fuse together to form the planets, imagine that striking us. An EMF is the reason why the first American space station collided with the atmosphere and burnt upon re-entry fortunately it was awaiting repairs for 5 years at the time so no-one was on board.
Galactic alignment in 2012 the sun and the centre of the milkway will be aligned this occurs every 36,000 years and the last time it occurred there was a max extinction on the Earth and Neanderthals were wiped out, which lead to the superiority of homo sapiens. It also coincides with when we started to become "civilised" which hints that a variable sparked homo-sapiens to socially change and become larger groups to survive through harder times. A "spring" tide is when the moon and the sun align and their combined gravity creates especially high tides on the Earth, throw the Galaxies pull into the mix and who knows what might happen. This doesn't just apply to water think of the millions of atoms floating around in space which will be affected by this and collide with Earth. The energy of the galaxy aimed at us is at least going to effect something in our lives.
Magnetic field (van allen belt) is weakening and reversal is suspected to be due soon. The Earth contains a spinning core of iron with a liquid outer core, this doesn't act like a bar magnetic instead the two liquids spin in such a manner that a dynamic magnet is made which are very rare. This magnet prevents us from being affected at ground level by galactic winds and solar flares as it deflects the energy, Mars lost its magnetic core at some point and that is why it is now a dead planet even though it might of been very similar to Earth millions of years ago. We know the magnetic pole is moving around 40km per year (I think the north pole is currently in Canada but is heading towards Siberia at the moment) and is speeding up as from historical documents the poles use to move at around 10km per annum in the mid 18th century. We know the poles swap periodically from recording the polarisation of the oceanic plates it was Wegner who came up with the theory on tectonic plate movement which is supported by this fact. There is a large patch over the southern Atlantic where the field has seemingly swapped and it is growing which is destabilising the entire magnetic field of the Earth and causing a hole in our electromagnetic defences. This hole is called the South Atlantic Anomaly and no-one can agree what caused it however it is a big issue and currently moving towards south America. The hubble space telescope is blind when passing through the SAA due to the increased radiation levels, plane are redirected if passing over the poles or SAA when radiation levels are expected to heighten due to a solar storm days before, It is possible that the air France crash was result of passing through the SAA. If we ever build a base on the moon a magnetic generator on a massive scale would be needed to shield the occupants from space weather.
Malthusian theory, Humans reproduce at geometrical ratio (2-4-8-16), resource production follows an arithmetical ratio (1-2-3-4) their is a time when Earth reaches optimum population and can no longer support more humans but we will of course
having babies crawling out of our ears thus starving ourselves. This has occurred in Africa and India the population is larger then the land can support and throw in a couple of natural disasters and famine, disease, droughts and all **** breaks loose. Human innovation is the reason why we have survived so long the Genetic modification pioneered in Mexico lead to varieties of grain and rice which can be harvested 3-4 times a year opposed to the usual 1-2. The green revolution spray some fertilisers on plants and you will get more food growing in larger density however spray too much and you will pollute water ways, water is a finite resource (water water everywhere but not a drop to drink) like fossil fuels the Earth has a set amount of water and if we contaminate it we will run out. Natural disasters have been on the rise recently with more tropical storms being created with massive amounts of energy at their disposal whilst a large hurricane use to hit the east coast of the USA once or twice per hurricane season they are now around 4-5 each year, this affects food supplies and everyone dies. Urban expansion more land is being covered by concrete every day then is being converted into farm land we will reach a stage where the price of viable food production land is more expensive then a house.
Yellowstone national park super volcano. Yes America you may well be the reason we have the next mass extinction you have a volcano which has a sister volcano on the other side of the world in Java, Indonesia which exploded around the time of the dinosaurs you can't see it any more as it is now one of the worlds largest lakes. Almost all of yellow stone national park and surrounding areas is just a giant spot on the surface of the Earth waiting to explode. Lots of dust and gas in the atmosphere blocks out the sun vegetation dies due to lack of light, our flesh burns as we sulphuric acid replaces the rains and with no sun the planet goes into a deep freeze with surface temperatures suspected to reach around -100C to -150C so you may want to take a coat to the party. Yellowstone volcano recently changed from yellow (dorment) to red status (light activity) add the energy from a galactic alignment to the mix and that spot will explode.
Cycle of glaciation by the Milankovitch and gobal warming. The Earth periodically has times of cooling and times of heating, these were mapped out by Milankovitch whom found a pattern. Every period of glaciation is preceded by a period of global warming which is brought on by a natural increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In case you hadn't noticed the last glacier ended around 40,000 years ago and we are due for one. As we industrialised and chose animals as livestock to mass produce we raised carbon dioxide levels and catalysed the cycle so a period of global warming has occurred which may otherwise not of done for thousands of years under natural production levels. We are now in the process of transferring to Aries and transfer is predicted to be complete in 2012, historically this has caused an age of change with the previous ones being associated with the coming of prophets and religious leaders e.g. Jesus who's symbol is a fish and the same as Pisces originates from the previous change from aquarius. We might have a new Messiah who would lead us away from our temples of money and back to places of worship to appease our god. Aries is the symbol for Mars and the traditional start of the zodiac, Mars is a planet which died for unknown causes it's magnetosphere collapsed and it was stripped bare by solar storms could this happen to us? Does this alignment cause a subtle change in our orientation due to gravitational differences which with our planet being in a chaotic state tip us over the edge?

Sorry but a 'galactic alignment' theory has no basis as i see it. The gravitational effect of the moon is evident only due to its close proximitary. The other planets in the solar system have very little effect let alone other stars and galaxies light years away. Gravitational pull has everything to do with distance.
A few years ago there was an alignment of 3 planets (cant remember which ones). There were alot of people that believed it would have an effect on the planet and a radio station (in the UK i think) convinced alot of people to jump in the air. Guess what, alot of the people fell for the prank and believed they could actually jump higher in the air. Of course, it was a prank, there would have been only a very tiny change, probably not even measurable.

They did prove that Jupiter and the Sun are what's causing the Moon to move further from earth. IMO, a lot of this has to do with the ancient civs. They knew a lot, a lot that we don't know, and a lot of people, including me, think they was taught this by "aliens". Otherwise so many things wouldn't have been known to happen around 2012. BTW, next election is in 2012 isnt it? lol

I don't believe aliens taught us anything, I can understand us being seeded by an object from an alien planet as how life suddenly began on Earth is still not understood. A research student nearly figured it out in lab using the then at the time proportions of gas and elements which were believed to of existed when life began and created simple amino acids and proteins which are the building blocks of life, then his experiment was invalidated as the proportions were wrong and it is now believed that life could be sustained but not necessarily created in that environment.
You do realise that makes no sense as we are in the gravitational pull of the super massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy already hence why we orbit it as does the rest of the milky way. Also that the gravity of the black hole in the centre of the milkyway is consuming and merging with the smaller galaxy our sun originally came from and de to the spin of this black hole the gravitational field is flattened to a disk shape not spherical like the objects in our solar system, thus concentrated. In 2012 we will travel through the galactic equinox which is the strongest region of gravitational influence from the super massive black hole. The mayans knew of the galactic plane and referred to it as the dark rift (due to the gravitational pull being greatest in this region galactic dust is most concentrated in this region so it appears darker then the normal sky). The increased gravitational energy could change the orbit of an object in the asteroid belt of the solar system.
I know gravity is relative to distance and has a logarithmic scaling but the mass at the centre of the milkyway is trillions and emits such a strong gravitational field that light can't escape it and it has always had an effect on our solar system and planet.
