So, one guy brought his computer in today. After pulling out 5 handfuls of dust (no exaggeration), I got a look at this computer. He has an ASUS A7X8X-X motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP processor. He wants to upgrade this for Empire: Total War. He gave me $400 to do this. He said I could keep whatever I didn't spend. I need the cheapest possible option to run that game around high settings with decent framerates. I'm most probably going to need a new power supply too. What do you think of this combo, or can I go cheaper? He won't be overclocking and isn't a hardcore gamer. Plays at a resolution of 1280x1024.

Can you guys find any combo deals?

Let me do a little looking around. As you know from last night, Rohan, I'm certainly no specialist in ATI/AMD products. But I can do my best to help :)

I found the minimum system specs.
* CPU: 2.6Ghz single core processor
* RAM: 1GB RAM (2GB for Vista)
* Graphics: a DirectX 9.0c card with 256mb RAM

Thanks. I'm usually good with deals when helping other people, just not for myself, haha. I want to at least make around $100. I really need the money. Cheaper is better, though!

Newegg or Tigerdirect. Or whatever can be bought from the same place for less?

Moreover, is he keeping the same harddrive? and case? as well as optical drive?

I don't care where it's ordered from. I just want the absolute cheapest price. My zip code is 21703. I'm going to start searching ebay. I don't want to rip this guy off with crappy parts. I'm going to start searching for a good case and power supply combo.

Arg. I don't know. You design an AMD based one, I'll see if I can get an Intel based system using a Pentium Dual Core.

EDIT: I think i've got something

The guy wants to use the case he has now. I just bought an Ultra 550w power supply for a great price. I don't need a hard drive. I like your choice, but I'm going to lean towards AMD. The Kuma is a better gaming chip. I want to give him an ATX board for upgrading later on if he wants.
