cursor problem..help

Hi Yall...
after booting up the cursor sets off all over screen opening everything and anything including shutdown window,so after formatting harddisk and the purchase of a new usb mouse, installed xp pro loaded mobo drivers and vga,at this point the cursor had been working fine,20 mins later it shoots offsceen then i have to shake mouse side to side to get cursor back onscreen,tried changing settings(mouse) in control panel no help.in bios mouse support os changed this option to bios mouse support,this to did not help...help

no just a microsoft mouse oem version no software but it has a nice red light underneath it,also it has a cable which plugs into usb..

Its optical aint it? Get a mouse pad or something :-\
