This might sound very easy but I'm very new to it, I'm trying to transfer files from a windows Xp laptop to a new windows 8 using a cable? I need a real idiots guide please.

Thanks
Matt

Do you already have a crossover cable (a special type of ethernet cable that has the xmit and receive connections crossed over) or are you asking what kind of cable to get?

Here's a MS page that explains how to transfer stuff using an Easy Transfer cable, networked computers or external drive. Move your stuff over - Microsoft Windows

If you already have an ethernet crossover cable, here's how to network 2 computers together using it: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/connect-two-computers-using-a-crossover-cable

to be honest, a lot of network cards today have autosense for the connecttions and will automatically switch into MDX mode, so sometimes you don't even need a cross over at all.
