I am probably the newbie on this forum, but I was trying to find someone who in laymans terms can tell me how I can take a simple document that I created on WORD or another program and put it on the internet so that it has its own URL? I hope that makes sense!

ok, the simplest way to do it is going to be to buy a domain name.
and buy some web space...

your web space will then be linked to the domain name, (it's easier if you buy them from the same place and let the seller set up the doman name to point to the hosting that you also bought from them.

from here you can save your word documents in HTML
then you can upload them to your site.

let say that you buy mysite.com

you save your word document that you want to be your index page, (as in the first one that people go to), you save that as index.html

you upload it to your site.
now anyone visiting your site www.mysite.com will see the index.html page.

now you want to upload a different page.
you save your second page as doc2.html

upload that to the webspace that you bought,
now when people visit www.mysite.com/doc2.html they'll see your second document that you published.

To avoid paying money you could also setup appserv or wamp5 if your ISP allows and host it off of your own computer. However there are a few free hosting services out there that allow you to upload html files, it would just be theirsite.com/yourusername usually.
