On a Dell D820, we had a failed HDD... so we replaced it...
With the new HDD installed, I go to install XP Pro and as soon as the installation moves to the "Installing Windows" stage, I get a fatal error:

An error has been encountered that prvents Setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

*yada yada yada*

Any ideas?
When viewing the setuperr.log it says
"Instalation Failed: D:\I386\asms."

Either you have a bad disk....or bad drive....

Ironically, ive never had a bad disk, so its probably the drive....so swap out the drive...

Yes, i have to swap drives for various installations of crap....sort of funny...

This happens on any system....mac, windows or linux....
I have great experience with this...
If you havent stolen the copy of xp, then swap it for a better drive...like a dvd drive or a cdrw drive....boom...error gone..

I work for the state of Georgia and we only have this one (and only) D820 we're testing to make it an upgrade from our D800s... the DVD-RW in the D820 apparently has different drivers than the DVD-ROM from the lower D800. The XP instalation couldn't detect a cd in the drive whatsoever.....

I also used the CD yesterday and fully installed it on a D800 with no flaws at all.... Though is is a copy of our origional......

Still.... neither of the above doesn't rule out the drive at all.....

Just tried the origional XP cd.... works like a charm.......
*scratches note on mental cavity wall*
