CPU overheats!

I have a asus p5ld and a zalman 7700 on my un overclocked 3.00 intel and in bios im seeing like 55degreesc and i dont know but i think this may be causinjg problems. i toulk my computer apart to apply the thermal paste and whent from 40c to 55c. what should i do i have taken the heatsink and fan and put it back on 2 times and nothing.

sometimes if you put a crappy thermal paste, or you just put too much of it, it will act as an isolator instead of a conductor....


A. Get a GOOD thermal paste or pad, like the AS5

B. Make sure you apply it equaly and not TOO Much of it!

ok how do u apply it equally? and befor i even put any paste on it it was running at like 70c in the bios.
So what else i ahve adjusted it tightened and loosed the screws for the heatsink and doesnt seem to gfet any better.

wait wait....... you said before you did it, it was running @ 40 degrees and then it turned into 55c... if the temp only DROPPEd then its fine.......
