In short, my girlfriends computer a gateway 700xl(maybe?) a few years old has been randomly going into sleep mode. As of now, it goes in every 5 seconds. She wakes it up, and gets half way through her password and before she is finishes it is back into sleep.

I can't find very much on this issue using a google search. I am not sure if it is hardware or software, but I am thinking it may be the powersupply. Its just i don't have an ohm/voltage meter.

Oh whats a guy to do, why am I incharge of fixing everyones! computer :-/

But I think I could put in a new power supply. Any advice on what may be the causing her computer to randomly hibernate?

Right-click on the desktop, click Properties.

Click on the Screen Saver tab -> Click on Monitor Power settings

Switch the scheme to "Always On"

that didn't do much, but thanks. I am going to restore the last good config, and try booting in safe mode.

This is a software problem unless the sleep button on her keyboard is stuck down. Unhook the keyboard and try it if restore doesn't work.
