compputer shutdown

My computer will not shut down anymore unless I usee the hard shutdown method (press the power switch for 5 seconds). What could be wrong ?

Does it hang, when you click start / turn off comp. ?

Possibly some kind of application that you launched that keeps it from shutting down. For example, it has a problem closing down, or you need to save it first.

I think its all the above. I ended up copmleting a partial wipe n clean with the startup disks. That took care of it. Im pretty sure it was somebody using my system that somehow got around sygate. I am now using a router and that will probably help. Thanks for your replies.
