Cheapest option for mobile internet for laptop?

AT&T's mobile broadband is $39.99/month for unlimited.
I have it on my netbook.
I considered tethering, but it was only $5 more to get the full-fledged mobile broadband, so that's what I did.

I suggest you read your terms because its not unlimited.

At&t, Verizon and Sprint have 5GB monthly caps on the data cards priced at $59.99 a month

You can get a Millenicom account which roams on Verizon towers which has a 10Gb soft cap. I suspect this is going to change though. This service is also $59.99 a month.

Also the $39.99 a month Verizon package was 50MB per month not 5MB per month. Still it was a laughable joke and anyone that got that package had to be retarded.

If the OP doesn't have a cell phone yet, I'd suggest getting a hackable PDA phone that they can tether. If you look the majority of them have been broken to allow tethering without an additional fee. Not sure about Verizon because I use At&t, but most of there PDA and Iphone packages are $30 a month. That is about the cheapest your going to get on a wireless option, but you'll have to carry a voice package as well.
