oh... that could be your problem right there. You should have two cables. One to connect cd roms to IDE2 and another to connect to IDE 1 to har drives and such, and another cable, for the floppy connector to connect to a floppy drive. So three connections.

As for the ribbon, it should only connect on one side, though it should be on the left I think (though mines white, not red)

Try both, if one works and the other doesn't your sorted.

Though try dissconnecting the cd rom from that ide cable, and only having the hard drive, does it work then?

in soem cases windows xp tells you to insert the cd into the A: drive. which is quite funny!

It is a thin red line on one side of the cable, and it goes on the HD the same side of the power line, ..on the side oppose to IDE1 caption..in there.
Since I find out where the red line goes, I don't get the message "primary slave drive ATAPI incompatible", I still get it though, if I disconnect the CDROM.
