I received the following email from Microsoft several days ago:

"Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access.

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way."

In the last several days, I have no longer been able to access my Outlook.com emails in Outlook 2021 Desktop (using POP3). Whenever I do send/receive, I get a pop-up box appearing stating "Enter your username and password for the following server: Server: outlook.office365.com, Username: my email address. Password: my correct password".

However, when I re-enter the correct password again, it doesn't work. The error message is 0x800CCC92 -ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

I have changed and re-entered the new password several times. The same password allows me to login to the emails at Outlook.com in my browser, but not in Outlook Desktop.

I have also set-up the email address again a few times using manual settings in Account Settings. I've tried different server addresses that used to work fine before such as outlook.office365.com and pop-mail.outlook.com. Also done repair etc.

I have been using Outlook Desktop for over 20 years so am very conversant in using it. I have set-up hundreds of email addresses over the years. However, no matter what I try, I can no longer access my Outlook.com emails in Outlook Desktop 2021.

It was working perfectly fine before for years and I've made no changes of late.

Please help! Thank you.

Please help! Thank you.
But how should someone help you?
What do you not understand? You just need to update your software or log into the said email service application directly, not through outdated third-party widgets.
It's that simple. And more correctly, you don't have to do anything if you directly open your outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, etc. and everything works.
But of course you can also use third-party widgets, but they just have to be up-to-date and only you and no one else can make the choice, update your software etc, so how can we help you, even don't imagine.
So please specify what would be your desire for help.
