When I highlight something and press enter/return/whatever, it prompts me to rename it. This is very cumbersome. I'd like it to act normal, where when something is highlighted and I hit that key, it will then open it accordingly.

Possible?

Simple answer is no. The system is designed to go into editing name mode when you press the enter key.

However if your like me and you prefer using keyboard as opposed to mouse (I started off in the dark old days of DOS with no mouse, but have since moved to Mac), then you just press COMMAND and "O" and file will open.

You just need to get used to a slightly different way of doing things as opposed to windows

Really? I can't edit the enter key function?

Hi,

Have you just moved from PC to Mac?

Give it some time, and you'll become accustomed to it. When I got my first Mac machine, I was initially frustrated by the return key's rename functionality having come from a Windows background. However, very soon I became used to it, and I don't think twice about using cmd+O to open apps and files, or the return key to rename files.

And remember, 'normal' is relative! :silly:

No. I've had a Mac for quite some time, but I rarely used it except for being able to stream music to it from my samba server when I'm in the garage. I've been trying to use Mac more to get accustomed to it since I work in the IT field, since nearly all of my experience is in Linux/Windows. I guess I just got really used to being able to control *everything* in my Linux boxes and even to a relative degree in Windows. I'm just kind of surprised something so simple can't be altered.

Guess I'll keep the Mac as my garage laptop for music then. :p

I agree. It wouldn't be difficult at all for Apple to allow users the option to change the action of the return key regarding renaming / opening files. They're not very keen on providing options to be honest.

It can be done, it's called macremap also there is a way to do it via the command line I have got it wrote down someware back home when I get back i'll take a gander.
