parents are giving me $1000 USD to buy a new machine. had this one for 4 years now and it's a little outdated. it's got a AMD 2000+ XP on an msi KM4M MOBO and 768 MB of ram.

the parts for the new comp are

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache $280

ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX $180

XFX PVT84GUDD3 GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit
GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready $170

CORSAIR 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM $134
DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel

Antec TPQ-850 ATX12V / EPS12V 850W Power Supply 100
& Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX $259

i'm going to use the drives out of my old pc ATM and was thinking on using some of the cash to buy a 500GB SATA drive. i'm going to be Running XP 32 bit for the time being.

also, i'm getting $170 back for rebates and would be greatfull if anyone could give suggestions on what to add on with it.

You don't really need 4GB of memory with a 32bit operating system

Use the money you save on the memory to get a 8800 series card

Any spare cash should be used on a third party cpu cooler

Otherwise it looks pretty good

:)

thought there was a way to run 4 gig on a 32 bit system. and i don't think the difference is going to cover a 8800 series. i will be getting an extra 100-200 next month and could possibly get it then. can you like two disimiliar cards together in SLI?

you goitta rethink the build when you almost spend more on your case and PSU than you do on your CPU.

think people over rate cases, i mean for me its a £30 case that comes with a PSU and i buy some extra fans for £5 thats $70 or max $100.

$260 or £130 is jus stupid on case and powersupply

if it's for gaming then get 2gb of ram and a 8800 series card.
Then later you can buy another 2 gigs of ram if you want to. But right now 2 should be enough and 32 bit OS's can only support 3.25gb.

well lathough that is true extensive googling taght me that 32 bit os's can only see 3.25Gb RAM but the operting system can use 4GB's

in otherwords if u did a bench mark with 3.25Gb RAM and then 4GB RAM the 4GB would still be better

so cut down on the case/PSU and drop ram to 2 gb. that would (maybe) get in an 8800. will a 550 watt cover the drain from the mobo, CPU, and 8800?

It's called overclocking. And you're not going to do very well with a crappy case. Although I must agree, the Antec 900 is a waste. It's not even aluminum...

You're wasting your money with a 850 watt PSU though. You really only need like 450, I'd get this:

Very high quality.

The real question though, is what are you using the computer for?
