Before I leave for college in July I'm going to need to make a computer. I'm going to use it mostly for gaming, music, and internet.

What do you think is the best/cheapest place to buy parts from? I know newegg.com is good, and there's a place by me, General Nanosystems, that has decent prices too.

This is what I came up with so far using newegg.

Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle 800MHz FSB Socket 754
Motherbord:
MSI K8T NEO-FSR Socket 754 VIA K8T800 ATX AMD Motherboard
Memory:
Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 400 (PC2 3200)
Hard Drive:
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133
Video Card:
ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X

With a $30 case I found on newegg and without drives or software it comes to $569.00. That's in my budget of keeping the thing under $700. Thats all without sales or digging in the refurbished section.

Do all those parts look like they'd come together to make a good system? Would you suggest something different/better? Thanks for your help.

cpu and 1 gig ram $262

mobo $113

Graphics card $125
case anything under $50
psu anything about $50
hard drive 80 gig seagate $65
this system will perform much better and will be only about 100 bucks more but will be more easily upgradable in the future. it is socket 939 and has 1 gig of ram plus it has a 6600 which is a significantly better card however the hard drive is only an 80gig but this was the best i could find without really trying hard

athlon 64 3000+
msi neo2-fsr
1 gig corsair value
seagate 80gb hdd sata
9600pro
thermaltake 420w
antec case

yeh, no doubt, that would be a nice computer for $700, although, i would get 512mb ram, and spend the money on something else.

I suggest socket 939. I also suggest a Newcastle if your not going to OC. If your going to OC, then a Winchester would work. I dont suggest Corsair value RAM. But G Skill value RAM i suggest, or OCZ.

I'll take those suggestions into consideration. I didn't plan on overclocking the processor as I thought it made it wear out faster and heat up quickly. But I know next to nothing about overclocking. So would spending a bit more to get that better mothorboard be better for me in the long run? Thats the only real difference I see in the one I kinda put together, besides the RAM, and the ones you guys suggested.

Thanks for your help.
