Hey guys, for my b-day, im getting an XFX 8600GT XXX 256mb to attempt to breathe some last resort life into one of our dells before setting it aside for a server, since that's about all they're good for anyway :D. On top of the 8600 im putting two 1GB sticks of Kingston PC5300.

Dell specs before...
Intel Pentium 4 Prescott @ 3.0ghz HT
160GB Sata
1GB PC4200
128mb ATI Radeon X300 (POS)

Dell specs after...
Intel Pentium 4 Prescott @ 3.0ghz HT
160GB Sata
2GB PC5300
256mb XFX 8600GT XXX

Do you think there will be any bottlenecks on this system? I figured the P4 could drive an 8600 pretty good, and going 8800 just doesnt make sense w/o having dual core. Mainly, i just wanted this system to play around on while im building my new dual core gaming rig w/ 8800gt. Supposedly this 8600 can play cod4 on max settings around 50fps which is very playable for me... although this was with a 4200 x2, im just worried the p4 will bottleneck, any thoughts?

Minimum COD4 Requirements
2.4Ghz Single Core or 1.8Ghz Dual core
512MB Ram
6600 or 9800 or higher

Thanks,
Kyle

My guess is that the P4 will probably bottleneck the 8600GT but I wouldn't be too worried about it.

alright, yea i thought it would a little bit, but this processor seems to keep up with new games pretty well which was a suprise to me, with it having HT and all, hopefull it'll do ok... thanks

Well, the 8600GT isn't really all that fast in the first place, I think the P4 would keep up with it just fine, especially at 3 GHz.

i would say your are going to see a pretty big bottlekneck id say the 7600Gt is more suited for that CPU and the bottlekneck will only get worse as more and more games use dual core tech

The 8600GT isn't much faster than the 7600GT at all. It was pretty much a disgrace to the GeForce X600 family.

Lol, well it's not a bad card, just don't expect it to max out Crysis or anything. (In fact it probably runs Crysis at medium low settings)

The thing is that the X600 series was always known for the awesome bang for the buck (point in case - 7600GT), and the 8600GT isn't quite on the same level bang for buck wise.

It's still a good card that will run COD4 well, maybe he doesn't want to have anything to do with Crysis mania?
