Best video quality for upload?

I'm looking for the best clarity in uploading my digicam to my computer (standerd new dell) and burning to dvd. The quality of what i've been using (mpeg) are not as clear as copying the video directly to my vcr. Is there a way to make the video on my computer and dvd burner as clear as it is in the camera?

Thanks! once the file is uploaded, can i compress it making it look somewhat better, or must i upload it in the compressed format? Also, when I've tried some of the AVI formats I lost the audio. Is there a cure for that?

I know i saound stupid but is the divx advantage mean that you can get a higher bit rate of video and sound in a smaller size or better quality for a bit rate if you know what i mean.
