I'm responsible for making backups of computers on a small lan (25 systems) and there are server backups(user files are safe, stored with active directory) but there aren't any backups of the clients, so if a client broke, I'd be effed. I'm thinking that making restorable images for clients might be the best way to go.- and saving them on an external hdd by date. What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone have experience with this type of stuff?

Thanks in advance.

I know my work uses Symantec Ghost. We make images and restore images all the time. Seems to work nicely, I know there are other options out there but I don't know much. May want to wait till some here who knows more posts. just my thoughts. =)

The way I do it:

Client PC is loaded with SyncBack which at 9am everyday backups the specified files to their H: drive on the sever.

Imaging is use Acronis. Acronis now has the ability for you to create 1 image for just about any computer. Which mean you create an image on a Dell, you can then use that image on an IBM, or Compaq, etc. It works great, its customizable, etc.

I use Symantec/Norton Ghost, it's nice and cheap and it works!

I have a ghostcast server (installed on a Windows XP machine) and I ghost the images across the network so I dont have to take an external hard drive around the building should i need to backup or restore a computer.

FOG and CloneZilla. Even cheaper than Ghost as they are Free.
