My friend is going to college, and needs some sort of computer set up for AutoCAD, gaming, messengers, and guitar pro 6. The budget is $1000. I was thinking a desktop and a netbook, but I'm sure you guys know more about CAD work than I do :p The only problem is that building isn't an option. So yeah, that's a bit of a wrench in the works.

Thanks for any and all help :)

How, pray tell, is building absolutely not an option? Even for somebody who's never done it before, it wouldn't take more than an afternoon and an evening (MAYBE a whole saturday) to build, so time can't be the issue.

The person isn't comfortable with building, and I can't really help him with it atm. He's also somewhat in a hurry. So building isn't really an option here. I know that it's the best option in most cases, but it isn't an option here.

^^you obviously didnt read what he said

does he need a monitor or is that included in his budget? Heres what I'd recommend, for the desktop you can pick out of these two:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227274

and I'd go with this for the netbook:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway...lack/9695408.p?id=1218150607790&skuId=9695408

It has a 6-cell battery so he'll get lots out of it before it has to be charged.

Man I just space out sometimes, I think I've inhaled too many solder fumes at my ripe young age. Edited my post accordingly

I wouldn't get a laptop with an Atom processor, and only a simple built in video chip if you also want to be doing any CAD work on that as well.

You'll need a laptop with a Core 2 Duo at least, and a pretty good dedicated graphics card. I believe the Atom is a pretty simple processor, so will not be ideal for any intense work.

I ran autocad at school on a core 2 duo and 4 gb of ram. So you should be fine

The thing I'm concerned about is the video card, I was under the impression that cards geared towards gaming weren't very good for CAD work (and that's the main goal of the comptuer)
