Apple counts down to 10B App Store downloads, lucky customer to win $10K

Apple slaps ticker on website, promises $10K iTunes reward

UPDATE: Apple has slapped a fast-moving countdown image on its homepage and main iTunes page in celebration of what will soon be the 10 billionth app downloaded.

Apple crows:

"As of today, nearly 10 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 10 billionth app, and you could win a US $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. Just visit the App Store, and download what could be your best app yet."

ha, apple's good business sense. yea we'll pay prize money. but we'll make sure we get it all back.

Apple won't make much money on the app store. I'd be surprised if they much more than a $250m since the iphone launched.

That have made [roughly] between 200 million and 350 million off of the app store. (at 10 billion app downloads)

Pocket change, on the scale of things. Indirect profits from the App Store are massive though. By indirect, i mean the amount of iphones/ipads sold due to being able to get apps from the app store.
Apple would happily make an annual loss of $500mil on the App store, The iPhone/Pad/Pod is nothing with out it.
