The issue I have with the double/chainlink pedal is that the left side of it almost always feels slacky or just plain not as good as the right.

Funny you mention that, that's what my friends pedal was like. That's why it sounded off. Sometimes he could compensate by hitting the pedal harder, but it made him tired quicker.

also, it's a PITA to tune two bass drums to sound identical

Well, I'll be running the same EMAD 2 head on both, So the same amount of dampening and tension and they should come out good. I may end up just triggering them anyway so it wouldn't matter.
