How does an AM3 CPU perform in a AM2+ socket? I would think it wouldn't perform as well as it would on an AM3 socket motherboard, but how big are the differences in performance for gaming?

AM2+ processors have built in DDR2 memory controllers.

AM3 processors have memory controllers that will support DDR2 & DDR3.

I guess the only thing with using an AM3 CPU with an AM2+ motherboard means you cannot utilise the full bandwidth potential of the DDR3 memory controller.

A bit like running two memory sticks in my rig instead of three?

so, since im already only running DDR2...

it wouldnt really matter with the mem controllers with an AM3 proc, because i dont use DDR3, so it wouldnt hurt to use a AM3 proc in my mobo?

As long as you don't exceed the power rating of the motherboard your good to go.

What mobo you running? EDIT: my bad.

He posted his link on the first post, and looks like it's on his sig too.

I was thinking of going back to AMD and the X2 4800+ until I get some extra money for a AM3 quad, then an AM3 socket and DDR3 later. But then when I think about it, it seems like a huge setback to my E7200.

The only real difference you will notice is the faster clocks on DDR3.

Basically its something like 1066MHz vs. 1600.

Not a huge difference, though it depends on your RAM.
