I was just wondering if any thing that has an am2 socket will fit in my mobo's die I ran cpuid utility and it says socket am2 (940) And when i started looking for a possible upgrade nothing specified as far as socket after am2 I just really need to know if there are variants of the am2 socket

There are two variants, AM2 and AM2+. They are physically the same. The main difference is AM2+ runs HyperTransport 3.0 at up to 2.6 GHz while AM2 is HT 2.0 @ 1 GHz. AM2 CPUs will work on AM2+ motherboards and AM2+ CPUs will work on AM2 motherboards.

Thanks for your reply. right now I have an amd athlon 6000+ and my mobo does have hyper transport so I assume I have an am2+ socket correct me if I'm wrong

1 more question my current mobo is an asus m2n68-vm it supports amd athlon64/phenom64 and sempron i need advice on an upgrade specifics would be great its mostly for gaming

Ill either get a better cpu for my mobo or an sli ready mobo for my cpu
