A particular PDF causes Acrobat to crash when I try to open it in any browser.

The PDF opens just fine if it is opened outside the browser, but when it opens within the browser, Acrobat crashes and gives various errors, depending on which system I'm using, from "Adobe Acrobat 6.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." to "Cannot find Adobe Acrobat." Something must be wrong with the PDF, but what is it?

What version of Windows and what browser and version. Acrobat 6.0 is quite old and probably won't function in newer browsers or OS. Whewn that happens ave it to My Documents folder and open it that way which it sounds like you already did.
