9V straight out of psu for fan?

I think quite common trick is(was) to stick a fan into +5V and +12V making it run at 7V, but has anyone tried putting one in 3.3V and 12V =8.7V? ...and yes I know there are these fan controllers etc. so don't preach me about them. thank you.

I'm not too sure if that would work..it sound like it should.. but always check properly first. Also the 3.3 V Rail would have to come from the 20/24Pin Motherboard Connector as there is only 3.3V Rail there, not on any standard 4 pin molex connectors. You could always solder a wire onto the back of the board where the 3.3v rail pin in under the 20/24 pin connector.
