Hey guys im just wondering...which is going to be more benfical to my system (amd 64 based) 2gig of corair value select 2x1gig or 1 gig corsair xpert 2x512 does latency really count for that much over an increase in 1 gig of ram? also is 2 gig of ram still overkill for games such as cod 2

It depends what games you play. A lot of the latest games need 2GB of RAM to play well, as they load all the map into the RAM, and in the case of Everquest 2, that's a lot of map! If you just play games like Unreal Tournament 2004, and 2007 when it comes out, which don't have massive maps, you would probably see more benefit in 1GB of low latency RAM. 2Gb of RAM would also speed up Photobucket, but you would get more benefit in fps on some games and in benchmarks with low latency.

Latency does not make much of a difference. 2 gigs is now the norm for recent games like BF2 and especially online games. 2 x 1 gig stcks in dual channel mode will serve you much better.

Load of rubbish! Latency makes a hell of a lot of difference.

Look at that. Lower latencies means the data can be accessed faster, which means that your PC will run slightly faster. Right?

Yup i take both your points (and great article on latency ty m8) but i mean its double the amount compared to a small dip in latency

im assuming the 2gb has a cas latency 2.5 and the xpert is 2 , it might make a difference, whatgames do you play?

Slightly being the operative word. In terms of cost vs performance, 2 * 1Gig in dual channel mode would be better. Try digging up some benchmarks on that and compare. 20ns difference is hardly ground shattering is it and the only benefit of getting low latency high frequency RAM is if you're going to overclock the processor. Plus, games are going to benefit from 2 Gig compared to 1. Go figure.

it will make a difference, but nothing that u would notice.
That 2gb is so much better, it's just 2x the amount of ram, and the amount is the one that makes the biggest difference.

Are they about the same price? Seeing you play those games...it's really up to you :D Why not get some 2.5-3-3-5 or 2.5-3-3-8 2GB of it? Still faster, but lower latency :D
