its an account you make to register games with, made by the company called "valve" and he game can only be registered once with that cd key and if the account is terminated, the game is no longer playable.

well you just buy the games in a store (half life, counterstrike, day of defeat to list a few) and then u add it to your steam account and its permenantly engraved into your account.
