1080i or 720p better?

Like everything, you must consider context!!!!

Taking scaling out of the question, 1080i is better than 720p, but you will almost always be better off minimizing the amount of scaling that has to occur.

One more quick A/V question, can I get basic 5.1 surround with just the right and left A/V jacks or do I have to get optical cabling?
I ask as my receiver does not have an optical jack and I really dont want to have to buy a new receiver right now.

You could use Pro Logic if your receiver has it, but you cannot get true 5.1 without a digital connection.

Hmm, I'll just settle for Pro Logic then, no desire to blow more money at the moment, that should be good enough for now.
