Ok heres the deal . a relative is getting rid of their computer and has offered it me first cos they know thats what i do etc . So anyway they said how much am i prepared to pay them so i thought to myself and said i would get back at them in a day or so .
Heres the spec
Intel celeron 1.7GHZ
128Mb pc2100 ram
40gb ide hard drive
cd rom drive
crappy onboard video
prolly a 17" crt
keboard mouse
maybe a desk

I was thinking around £30 which for USD is about double at $60
my plan was too bang another 512 or 256mb ram in it and another 60Gb hard drive and use it as a server in my house which is where i come to my second question
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How easy would it be to use this as a server
basicaly my network at the moment is like this
1) i have a linksys wag 54gs with my 2 desktops wired to it and my laptop wirelessly connected to it
I wanna use the server as a filestorage server where all files are stored . How easy would this be to do without incurring too much cost on myself

My thought is to connect the comp to one of the router ports and set it up there someone but are there other ways ?

Very, Very easy. you can just enable filesharing on windows.

Ok so that is that one sorted now just the other question
I was gonna offer £20 at first then if they said no £25 then if i had to total out at £30

they would get £50 max selling that on ebay or to some random person,
but to you id say £25-£30 tops would be fair. £20 might be a bit low but no harm in asking. :)

yea its pretty easy to use it for file storage. why not just enable file sharing like said above. im on my desktop atm and i can easy access my documents on my laptop using one shortcut. thats pretty much the same thing as a file server imo

I think i am gonna offer 30tops . For what i would use it for 30 would be all it is worth for me . As i would only use the server to store files such as music for everyone in the house and important document back ups such as schoolwork and ebay stuff we have

i want to do that but its a bit of a waste of power. im going to try putting an external hdd on my router when i get my home hub (or w/e diff isp i end up with)

anyway good luck :p

yh i dnt have no massive amounts of storage on my computers but i always have file sharing enabled coz im constantly playing movies from my dektop through my laptop which surprising plays when my connection is as low as 2MB/s i mean my local not to the internet.

ive left my desktop on downstairs in just glad i can turn it off with VNC :D
i can also copy some stuff accross in the mean time. its great. i just think its a waste to leave it on all the time so i never do

I currently use the desktop downstairs as file storage but with only 80gig hd its getting empty very rapid so i need(cough want cough) a server to store stuff on . Also when my parents go to bed before me they turn the desktop downstairs off thus leaving me disconnected from all my porn:D nah not realy my other files though so a server would be usefull as it could be left on all the time . And with something this powerless my parents wouldnt moan about the elctric bill
I dunno weather to take the 120gb hd out of my desktop and put it in the server or take the 60gb and put that in there

bigger is better, 120gb in the server ftw. 60gb is plenty for the os and some porn
..i mean files
