How do you go about checking the task manager if its frozen?
Do you use a wireless mouse? Maybe the batteries are almost dead? :P
Hook your laptop up to the Linksys router with a CAT5 cable and try playing the games/youtube to see if it continues to happen. Make sure to DISABLE the wifi adapter though, I believe wireless will take priority.
The most efficient way to do it, while maintaining stability, would be a VPN setup. In this type of situation, however, you may want to go with a VPN concentrator of some kind to support all the traffic. We have 3 VPN concentrators where I work to all of the sites we support (5000+) and its solid.
Couple of questions:
- Is your modem bridged? (public IP on your router)
If not, is your routers private IP set as a DMZ host on the modem? Or do you have port forwards in your modem also forwarding port 25565 to your router IP?

Try running this command in a command prompt:
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
This will basically reset your NIC to defaults.
It is recommended to reboot your computer afterwards.
