    Last ditch 939 upgrade

I believe the Opteron will be fine for gaming. The main difference between the Opterons and the Athlons is the extra cache for the Opterons. And I agree with worshipme, or at least an 8800GT. Both outperform the G80 GTS's.

What kind of processor do you recomend?

3dmark06 I know uses at least 4 in the second CPU test. Crysis might, but I was under the impression that it used only two threads. Wish I could think of something else, but I haven't used any other programs that do.

What kind of processor do you recomend?

By "futureproof" I mean be ready for programs that have 4 threads. Most programs today don't take advantage of quads, as they're much harder to code. Most have one thread, some have two, but few have four. In the case that is has one or two, a faster clocked dual-core will generally outperform...

What kind of processor do you recomend?

Is a quad absolutely necessary? :p If you're not doing much more than that, there's no need for a quad. The quad is only good for extreme multitasking and games that utilize it. A faster-clocked, cheaper dual-core makes more sense to me, one of the new 45nm ones. Testing has shown that they've...

    which video card

65nm vs 80nm, 120 shader processors vs 16 (plus a higher core clock), higher memory clock with same bit-interface. All favoring the 2600PRO. In simpler terms, it just is. :D

    which video card

The 2600PRO is much better than the 8500GT, well worth the extra money in my opinion.

    Newer Gpu News

This thing's supposed to be a monster. But so was the 2900XT. I have high hopes for this though. It apparently got 9573 3dmarks on 2560x1600 (pic at bottom). But as we know from the 2900's case, 3dmarks don't mean everything. :p You can go here to check the specs, I would post the picture but...

    [ny] Fs: 8800gt

They come in both 256 and 512MB, but the 256MB models seem to be more common.

    [ny] Fs: 8800gt

I'm pretty sure it's a GTS. The GTS cooler is longer than the GT: 8600GTS: 8600GT:

    Quick CPU Upgrade

I was talking about the 5600+ and the 6400+ you recommended. The 4200+ he linked will work, but the 5600+ and the 6400+ are only available on AM2.

He has socket 939 though, so those unfortunately aren't options.

x2 Until nVidia releases the 8800GS, the 3850 owns that price area.
