    cable to internet?

If you do not wish to run a wire, then you will need to utilize wireless. I am not a huge fan of wireless as it can be a bit shakey the farther out you are from the wireless router.

    Vpn

Don't cheap out and use Windows VPN for this. If you need a permanent VPN tunnel then you need a hardware VPN. Cisco's are sweet if you can afford them. I use Netgear FVS318's ad FVS328's alot when I need my clients to have a hardware VPN. The netgears will cost about $150.00 to $250.00...

    VPN Router

Another good VPN router for hardwire is the Netgear FVS318 or FVS328. These are easier to configure for those not use to the Cisco IOS EasyVPN.

    Disconnections. . . A lot

Can you connect the dsl straight into the PC and see if you get disconnected? This will tell you whether its the router or the service.

    Printer sharing

Agreed, Print server is the easiest way. Then do straight TCP/IP printing. No worries about sharing permission or any of that, of course Windows 98 will have issue without third party LPR software.

    Two different wireless networks . . .

Next time you logon to his network you should, also log into his router and disable it. NO NO NO.. don't do that, that would be wrong.

    network protocol? which one?

The point is that any number of protocols are being used at any given point in time. You will rarely find one protocol in use. Normally all of these protocols stem from the TCP/IP protocol stack such as UDP or TCP, however you might notice IPX or SPX if you are on a company network that uses...

    Slow Connection

From the fluctuations you are describing in signal strength (which will cause the drop in bandwidth), you might want to take a look at signal interference. Is the router close to the microwave or any old 2.4GHz phones? It might not be a bad idea to move the router anyway as neighbors might...

    bridge mode

Bridge mode allows you to connect to another person's PC and share files back and forth. You can think of it as a virtual peer-to-peer network.

RJ45 ethernet cable - Can I crossover the crossover?

Or just buy some cable and make the cable yourself.

    X800 Pro ---> XT PE

Just need to make the connections to the other pipelines. People use to do this kind of thing with pencils cause the graphite is conductive. I don't have a scematic to show where to use the tape or pencil though. Also, you can easily destroy the card!

    File/Print Sharing

Sounds like your print spooler service is pissed off. Try stopping that service and then run the wizard.
