Total bull. An mpeg is an mpeg and an m2v is an m2v. Wether they are COMPLIANT to any standalone format (VCD, SVCD, DVD) is another matter....but that is not the posters question is it? He's not ASKED to make compliant files ready for authoring to DVD.........

But it doesnt need re-encoding...all it needs is a player that supports .m2v's or the file name changing to an .mpg extension........why waste hours doing unnecessary work....and STILL ending up with a m2v file..?

The quality of the DVD MEDIA itself plays a more important function than either + or -. Whichever DVD format you use, someone will NOT be able to play it correctly regardless of the format (or indeed the media).

An m2v is an mpeg2 'video only stream' in other words it contains no AUDIO (often descibed as an ES or Elementary Stream)..... its as simple as that. There is NO such thing as a dedicated 'm2v codec' all it takes is a media player and a mpeg2 codec (like ANY SOFTWARE DVD PLAYER). Try...

Its no more than marketing BS, stick with a good/powerful 4 or 5:1 audio system. Aim for a system with a powerful mains powered sub (its the sub that blows your mind not the [pointless?] extra channels).

Had this problem myself a while back (about 2 years....) so try this (presuming its not a faulty HDD). Disconnect the power supply to the HDD and swap it for another (from say a CD or DVD drive). My guess is your psu (or a power channel) is on its way out and no longer has the oomph to supply...
