    Advantages to larger RAM capacities?

Say I want 4GB of RAM in my computer. Is there any (performance) advantage to having 2x2GB over 4x1GB besides the fact that I will have no DIMMs left open? Will the power drain for the 4x1GB be a lot compared to just 2 sticks? Thanks.

    First Build Components

EDIT - Just noticed the memory choices are different speeds... not sure. Either CPU is fine. Both will get the job done when it comes to email, word processing, basic multimedia, and most games. Again the quad core might be better for multitasking but you should check with someone with more...

    First Build Components

The CPU is a very good one, but if you are not going to build a gaming computer as you stated in your other thread it might be better to get a quad-core processor. From what I hear, dual core is better for running a single high-resource program (such as a game) whereas quad-core is better for...

    Some RAM questions

Right now I'm using this RAM: 2x1gb 800MHz PC6400 with 4-4-4-12 timings. I am looking at buying these sticks: 2x2gb 1066MHz PC2 8500 with 5-5-5-18 timings. Before I do, I have several questions. I know running them both simultaneously would mean the 1066 would run at 800. Would the 4-4-4-12...

Backing up on an internal hard drive

Ah thanks. So as long as I don't reformat my current drive and install on the new one I should be fine xD. Thanks.

Backing up on an internal hard drive

Hi all, I'm thinking about upgrading from Windows XP Home 32 bit to Vista Business 64 bit. I would like to back up my music, movies, documents, etc. so I can transfer them back to my hard drive once Vista is up and running. I don't have an external hard drive, but I have a spare 300 GB internal...

    IE7 on XP Home SP3

My Internet Options in control panel is missing. I have tried these fixes: One I don't see a dllcache directory in system32. Two I don't see Internet Explorer under either HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Checked S&D, it's not the problem. Three Four How do I get Internet Options...

    IE7 on XP Home SP3

My windows live update was not working, so after a fix involving renaming a .exe file, I downloaded IE7, SP3, and WMP 11. After installing these, I discovered that IE7 cannot run - as soon as I run it, it crashes. I have tried running without addons to no avail. Anyone know what the cause is...

    Screen Capture Software

Thanks, can't believe I missed that. For some reason though, it doesn't capture my audio. I've tried all the settings (CD, mic volume, line volume, Stereo mix) but it won't pick up sound from my computer. The sound is on and I can hear it through the headphones. Right now I'm using a Realtek...

    Screen Capture Software

Does anyone know of a good (preferably free) screen capture program? I want to take video of what's going on on the screen w/ audio. I tried Camtasia but that only seems to record incoming audio from the mic, not outbound audio. I have used FRAPS before except it only captures programs that use...

    Installing Updates before Shutdown (XP)

My copy of Windows is legit =P When it freezes I wait for a bit before I get fed up and hit the reset button - I think the longest I've waited is about 20 minutes. Windows updates says it's about 400 KB so there's no way it should be a 20 minute install, right? Peter - when I run it through...

    Installing Updates before Shutdown (XP)

I recently built a new computer running Windows XP Home. For the past few days it's been wanting me to install those "important updates" before shutting down - the kind that, after clicking shutdown, it installs them THEN shuts down. Problem is, it never actually installs them. After a few...

    PCI wireless adapter

I recently built a new computer (Win XP Home), which works fine except I cannot get it to recognize my old Netgear wireless PCI adapter. I installed the latest driver without any problems, which then told me to turn off the computer, put in the card, and reboot for it to be automatically...

A few questions about buliding a computer

Thanks a lot third and heffer. Another stupid question: PSU PCI-E connectors should work for both conventional and 2.0 PCI-E slots right? Seems obvious but I wouldn't want to buy an incompatible PSU, open it up, then realize I made a mistake.
