    No keyboard on POST

I'm getting 'press F1...' and of course no response when pressed. It would be interesting to try a USB keyboard. I don't think I have one around but may try to borrow one or something.

    CPU Pin repair

Will a credit card fit between the pins on that CPU ? That's how I did it last on a Socket A 462 I think.

    No keyboard on POST

Greetings, Recently acquired a used Mobo and it won't "hit" the keyboard on POST and of course won't enter the BIOS with the DEL key or acknowledge any key functions. Used 3 different known working keyboards, wiggled the ps2 connector etc...nothing. It seems to POST OK otherwise. I think...

    External USB Drive boot

One of my machines has no HDD and I use "Puppy Linux" booting from CD and saving to a flashdrive...works great and easy to set up.

    Ubuntu and optical mouse

Anyone using Ubuntu and an optical mouse? I've installed Ubuntu on more than one machine and can't get an optical mouse to work. The mouse lights up but no on-screen movement. Change to a rollerball mouse and it works perfectly. Not a big deal, but I do prefer an optical mouse. Any ideas about...

    Can't install drivers in Win98

The driver intro screen has Win9X as one of the choices yet does not work. And the driver that came with the motherboard won't load either...seems like that should load into any version of Windows. I've been trying to think of something in the BIOS that would cause this. I guess I need to dig...

    Can't install drivers in Win98

Hi, I just put together an inexpensive P4 1.8 GHz system and can't get the Geforce 5500 video driver to load or the motherboard driver. Board does not have onboard video. (ECS L4VXA2) I've also put Xandros Linux and WinXP(on separate drives) on this system and those seem fine on the unit...

    CPU/Motherboard ?

What happens if one installs a faster CPU than a motherboard is approved to support ? I did a search but could not find the answer. I have a couple of old 1.2 Ghz socket 370 Celeron's,(I know, old stuff) and boards are hard to find that support 1.2. What would you do...throw 'em away ?

    Linux Distribution Recommendation Thread

I have to agree with Bruce...Xandros installs easy and works great. I've tried Mandrake and Knoppix live and Xandros tops them easily. I'm sure some of the others mentioned in this thread are excellent distro's but I would be surprised if any of them install as effortlessly and auto recognize...

    Another RAM Question

Thanks for your replys. I forgot to mention that the MOBO user guide has a little memory module table that lists DDR266 and DDR333 but shows DDR400 faded out and says this. "Note: We do not guarantee that all DDR 400 memory modules will work properly with your mainboard." Knowing this, do...

    Another RAM Question

Hi, My first post here...sorry if this is a dumb question. I've read the rules and done some searching but can't seem to pin this down. The last computer I built was back in the late '90s, so I can't seem to grasp some of the newer terminology related to RAM even after reading the guide on...
