    Same brand wireless cards?

Make sure they use the same wireless specification to get the most out of the equipment though. IE> if the router is 802.11g then you want 802.11g wireless cards.

2 computers connected through a network switch

Well no. You dont technically "Need" a router. The reason that both computer wont connect at the same time is that, using a switch, each computer needs a WAN IP address from the DSL modem. Most ISP's only allow you one WAN ip address. The easy solution would be to buy an inexpensive broadband...

Win98se won't see XP on network

I think it may be because the 98se machine is using FAT32 filesystem and the XP machine is 'probably' using NTFS. FAT32 Is not compatible with NTFS, but NTFS is backwards compatible with FAT32.

    Good cable modem to buy??

Well, for one, it is our MOST replaced modem we have ever used (3com) and everytime we change our upgrade ANYTHING internally the (3com) cable modems take a dump, and we have to find a way to fix it. Motorola is not as bad, they are about middle of the line in the lineup of modems we have, with...

    Good cable modem to buy??

ACK! No 3com!!! They were great back in the dial-up days, but from MASSIVE professional experience, 3com cable modems are SH!T. SA - Scientific Atlanta, makes a great modem, but best IMO is Toshiba.

    Wireless Network With 2 COmputers

The usb adapters usually work better because you can position them higher off the ground, whereas the PCI adapters are pretty much stationary. As for speed, there really is no difference because of the bottleneck effect. Most ISP's do not offer more than 5Mbps Down, and USB can go up to 11Mbps...

    Ethernet or USB

You just repeated exactly what I said in the above quote, What was the point of this post?

    Ethernet or USB

That makes no sense. How were you sharing the connection if you were using USB and cat 5? Through a router with USB support? Do you have download speed numbers for each computer or did yours just "seem" faster. Like I said, unless you are getting more than 12MBPS from your ISP, it is a...

    Ethernet or USB

yea, exactly as I said, one way or another, its doesnt affect you internet connection speed.

    Ethernet or USB

Yea for 2 reasons, if you ever decide to be on a network, IE have more than one computer connected to the internet, you will need to be using ethernet. Second, if you start having driver issues with the usb, you will then have to go ethernet anyway. And since the card costs like $10-15, and...

    Ethernet or USB

No. However, knowing windows, it may make it a bit more stable. ;) You most likely arent getting more than 5MBps download with your cable modem. Ethernet is capable of 100MBps and USB I "think" is capable of 12MBps, but I KNOW it is 7 or more. What this means is that the cable modem will be...

    ISP Problem?

Most likeley that right about after you start downloading and then it slows down to 100 rather quickly. Windows will start DL'ing early and for the first few seconds it makes it look like your getting a higher speed. I bet that if you DL a large file, your average DL speed will not be more...

    ISP Problem?

they were ALL request timed out except for the first one? Thats strange, sounds like a firewall. I would do it a few times and see if it starts replying again. Really you shouldnt be getting any saying Request timed Out (this is called packet loss). But if your getting more than 25% loss, I...

    ISP Problem?

In a word no. Your MAXIMUM download speed with at 1024k connection will be around 100kbps. Remember your download speed (1024) is in Kilobits, and your file transfer speed is in Kilobytes. Just do this, open a command prompt and type: ping www.google.com -t and let it go for about 30 seconds...

    Cable Modem Problem

Sounds like a possible bad Network card to me. Does your modem have USB capability? If so I would get a USB cord and try hooking it up that way. If you dont know how, call your cable company.
