I was a big fan of OpenOffice.org, until LibreOffice [libreoffice.org] forked it. Now I use LibreOffice instead.
Apart from some Asian font type support -- I assume this won't be an issue for you, LibreOffice is almost perfect.
Both OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are free. Direct downloads...
Chuck, I did some research, and now believe that you should just forget about these patches for the time being. Chances are MS messed up [infoworld.com], and the patches will be re-offered ad nauseam until they fix it.
You could rebuild BCD (boot configuration data) under Windows Repair. I suspect your BCD is corrupted. See this guide [pcsupport.about.com] for steps to do so.
I went through your other thread and it seems like you had some trouble with updates for a while now. This is just a random attempt: could you try to uninstall/reinstall the updates without NOD?

Usually when Windows offers the same updates, it's no more than a nuisance. It's just that for some reason Windows failed to register your updates.

Guessing in the dark here, but I don't think it will be announced on 10 September. A new iPhone is about as exciting as it gets for Apple lovers (or haters?). The release of Mavericks on top of that can only add marginal values.
