if you're just going to have the system for a year then go with the 6800GS. the 7800GS isnt overkill at all and you could use the power so if you can invest the money go for it, though the 6800GS should prolly be good for the next year.

I just built a new PC for a family member, and I put 512 MB of RAM. It has 2 x 256MB DDR400 RAM, but for some reason, the PC recognizes it as only 256 instead of 512. What's happening here? (Mobo supports 2GB of RAM)

OK, I have a nice PC at the moment, plays games very well, but I want to upgrade my sound card. The internal one isn't that great. I have a 6 channel surround sound speaker system. Can you configure 8 channel sound cards to work with 6 channel speakers? Thanks for the help!
