if i heard that come out of the mouth of any of the various people form HP/Compaq i had spoken to, i would be a happy camper, and i wouldn't be ranting about it here.
what they have told me, is quite the contrary, hence my frustration.

Compaq locks up the BIOS on their boards so you can't overclock... which is smart on their part... the last thing they want, is your grandmother poking around the BIOS and setting her FSB to 300....

shit happens = HP/Compaq recalls a part, replaces the part, and fixes the damage THEIR defective part causes to my laptop

are you sure? what BIOS and revision is it?
i have a Sempron 64 2800+ that i am overclocking from 1.6Ghz to 2.08Ghz on stock voltage... (i will be stepping it further, to get more ram bandwith, as i put the ram on a divider down to DDR333, and clocked it back up with the FSB to about DDR406...
same here... until now, i have always had good experiences with HP/Compaq...
but this is a horrific display of general consumer relations, and how much they respect the users of their products...
it's truly sad.
