Pop an AMD Phenom II 965 on that board and it should still run fairly decent for what it is. You'll need a good cpu cooler with that cuz it does run hot

Now thats a cool CPU!!! The only thing i am afraid of is getting another CPU cooler and have it shit the bed on me. That one was a CoolerMaster. hear nothing but good, yet this one fired.

Dono, It could have been a Ryzen and the coolermaster could still choke the CPU. If it fries it fries!

Cpu's today have a thermal protection that prevents them from frying themselves, I think that the Phenom chips have a thermal throttle/shutdown too

If it's an air cooler the metal doesn't shit the bed, but the fan can if not cleaned on a regular basis. If you smoke in the house this will speed that process up 10x. If you want to stick to air cooling I suggest getting this. Noctua will send you brackets for free when upgrading forward if you ever move to AM5 or a newer Intel platform in the future. You can also get their iPPC fans that are IP65 rated to keep dust out of the bearings (they're the black ones).

That's why I found it weird that your fan breaking would kill the CPU... It should just overheat and then shut down.
