Windows Vista Discussion

The head of Microsoft's open source lab is inviting Mozilla developers up to Redmond for some help in making sure Firefox and Thunderbird run on Windows Vista. The offer is part of a weekly lab Microsoft is holding for developers in order to reduce application compatibility problems.

With Windows Vista nearing its first release candidate, application compatibility has taken center stage. If customers' applications don't seamlessly work with the new operating system, many will hold off on upgrading. In turn, Microsoft has begun to seek out bigger developers and work with them directly.

For four days each week through December, Microsoft is hosting a Windows Vista Readiness ISV Lab. Although Mozilla competes with Internet Explorer, the alternative browser is also a top third-party application, and Microsoft's developer ecosystem is critical to the success of Windows.

Vista is slated to be released to the Public in or around January 2007. Plus what i have read recently of the RC1 build there has been some major stpes in stability even though some of the builds after Beta 2 were buggy as heck.

It's been a while, you can finaly take that sigh of releif. Today Microsoft released build 5536 on Microsoft Connect.

The last build released, 5472, was released over one and a half months ago. Build 5536 is a branch of the RC1 milestone, however it does not appear to be the final RC1 build.

The build weighs in at 2,643.66MB, and is currently only available in X86. It is not yet known when or if a X64 version will be released.

So what's new? Performance in this build has been drasticly improved, with more stability and reliability. Some UI improvements here and there, including some new icons. And it also appears installation time has been dramatically reduced.

hhmmmm.... it works, I just checked it. It goes to the sign in screen.

it took me to the sign on screen in ff, but it wouldn't load in IE. I download vista through IE. do you have the direct download link to the new vista

This is a Pre-RC1 build not the RC1 that is available to the public. So most people cant get this unless you were a part of the group that originally tested it.

I will say that it has leaked to torrents already.

Vista Can Play HD DVD
About 22 billion people freaked out yesterday when the word on the internet was that the 32-bit version of Vista coulnÂ’t play Blu-ray or HD DVD content. Apparently the developer who made those remarks was incorrect. So, there is no reason to panic, the bundled DVD software that comes with your new HD drive will work just fine.

"The information he provided to that audience was incorrect," a representative told CNET News.com. "Playback is possible with Windows Vista in 32-bit." The decision of whether to offer that support, the representative said, won't be made by Microsoft but rather by the third-party software makers that create DVD playback software, folks like CyberLink and InterVideo.
