Will a modular PSU work with old systems?

depends if it's AT or ATX
99% of cases and PSU's are ATX today, and have the same kind of connectors. the 4-pin molex plugs, and the 20 pin ATX connector - although there are some newer ones, like the extra 4-pin connector, or the 24-pin ATX connector for PCI-E motherboards.
if your case is ATX, it will work.
if you get a PSU with a 24-pin connector, you just need a 24 to 20 pin converter (an older ATX system will always use the 20 pin connector) although most PSU's are still 20-pin
