What is the easiest way to transfer files from a desktop computer to a laptop?

using a crossover cable, setting up a network (with a router), using a USB drive, re-burning CDs, email...there are a million ways.

Well i have about 20 GB of data i want to transfer from desktop to laptop. I dont have a usb cable that can transfer files. I dont have any serial or other cables. Burning would take way too long and emailing would take even longer. I have a wireless modem with 1 ethernet port and one usb so i dont think i can use that. I tried connecting the computer and laptop with a ethernet cord but i couldnt set up the network correctly for me to be able to connect them.

The best way to transfer 20GB would be Firewire, but its expensive, and i doubt that your old PC has the cabability for it.

The computer and laptop both dont have firewrie like you said.
