Second hard drive

I'm going to buy a second hard drive to store files, images, etc. I'll use my original drive for the OS (XP Home) and applications.

About once a year, my XP Home crashes and I have to reformat my hard drive. When I have these problems, would it possibly affect the data drive? If so, would an external USB 2.0 drive be any safer?

It would not affect the Data drive because its a seperate hard drive...

Is there any kind of connection that I could use in an emergency by removing my data drive from the desktop and connect it to my laptop to transfer files without using a case?
